  KEYBOARD SHORTCUTS

  Maya is designed to be used with shortcuts.
  Some shortcuts, like holding down the spacebar
  for most of the editing and component controls,
  are critical to even viewing the interface.

  NODE CHANGES:
    * Undo: [Ctrl]+[z] or just [z]
    * Redo: [Shift]+[z]

  VIEW CHANGES:
    * Undo view change: [ [ ]
    * Redo view change: [ ] ]

WORKSPACE CONTROLS:
  * toggle channel box & attribute editor = [Ctrl]+[a]
  * arc-rotate = [alt]+left mouse
  * pan = [alt]+mid mouse
  * zoom = [alt]+right mouse

MODULES:
  * Animation = [F2]
  * Modeling = [F3]
  * Dynamics = [F4]
  * rendering = [F5]

TRANSFORMS:
  * select=[q]
  * translate=[w]
  * rotate=[e]
  * scale=[r]

COMPONENTS:
  * object=[F8]
  * vertex=[F9]
  * edge=[F10]
  * face=[F11]

ADD to a selection: [Shift]+Left Mouse click on addition objects (or select around)
REMOVE from a selection: [Ctrl]+Left Mouse click or select around

TOGGLE between one view and multiple VIEWS: Tap Space Bar
DISPLAY MARK-UP MENUS (for quick access to Maya functions): Hold down Space Bar

DISPLAY CONTROLS:
  * [1], [2], and [3] = NURBS level display.
  * [4]=wire-frame
  * [5]=surface
  * [6]=show textures
  * [7]=show lighting

DUPLICATE: [Shift]+[D]
NOTE #1: To create a mirror copy go to the Edit/ Duplicate option box and set X = -1.
NOTE #2: [Ctrl]+[D] will duplicate using the parameters in the Menu/Edit/Duplicate option box, including mirroring and instancing options. By default, it excludes the creation node, and so the copy does not have attributes for segements and size. To include the creation node in all copies go to the Edit/ Duplicate option box, choose [*] Duplicate Input Graph, and hit Apply. Any further [Ctrl]+[D] duplicates will also have the creation node.

To create a HIERARCHY:
[Shift]-select any number of objects and hit [p]. All objects will be parented to the last one selected.

Creating a SHELF BUTTON from a menu tool:
Hold down [Shift]+[Ctrl]+[Alt] and hit the menu item. Alternatively, click on the tool so it appears at the bottom of the toolbox on the left side of the interface and middle-mouse drag from the toolbox to the custom shelf.

To End a Tool use: [Enter]
To end a tool use and Start Anew using the same tool: [y]

ZOOM EXTENTS: [a]
ZOOM SELECTED (and make the center of an arc-rotate): [f]

ANIMATE all keys: [s]
Show manipulator tool (for deformations): [t]

PIVOT toggle (to move the pivot): [Insert]
NOTE: To return the pivot to the center of the object: Modify/Center Pivot.

These materials were created for a 2005 class at Pixar University, to teach the basics of Maya modeling, texturing, and animation to the Layout team.
The version of Maya at the time was Maya 5, but most of these notes should apply to all versions of the program.
